WHERE DO FRUIT FLIES COME FROM?

As the name implies, they are associated with fruit but in particular rotting fruit, vegetables and fermenting liquids.

They can undergo complete metamorphosis in under 10 days in warm weather, which means a female can lay as many as 500 eggs on rotting fruits and vegetables for each egg to go through larval and pupal stage to adult in that time!

The ability of fruit flies to appear from 'nowhere' and be 'everywhere' can be shocking and amazing at the same time.

HOW CAN FRUIT FLIES BE TREATED?

The video above was taken in the property of a client who lived closed to apple trees. He had a bedroom, bathroom and hallway with innumerable flies.

When there is such a large infestation a space treatment will eradicate the infestation. This can be done by fogging an insecticide, using smoke bombs or single shot aerosols.

Control also includes establishing and eliminating the breeding site if possible. Removing empty bottles or cans, checking for rotting fruit, vegetables or pools of spilt liquid will help in removing the source. Good hygiene is essential in resolving a fruit fly problem and in minimising risk.

HOW CAN FRUIT FLIES BE PREVENTED?

As mentioned above, scrupulous hygiene along with the resolution of housekeeping issues and good food storage is essential.

Pest control suppliers have a range of proven products to assist in the control of fruit flies. These include non-toxic fly traps, glue pads, fly screen mesh and electric fly killers.

Three Counties Pest Control provide fly control for homes and businesses in East Devon, West Dorset and South Somerset.
