DO NOT GIVE RATS A REASON TO VISIT OR STAY ON YOUR PROPERTY
A daytime sighting of a rat in your garden or evidence of activity can be quite unsettling. There are some actions that you can undertake to help yourself before calling a pest control business:
DENY HARBOURAGE
Rats love decking, sheds, compost, debris, clutter and overgrown gardens. They fear predation, so naturally gravitate to areas that make them feel relatively secure.
They can squeeze through a pound coin sized hole, so can you proof any ingress points to your decking or shed to prevent access? Is the shed old, decrepit and in need of removal?
Can you start a garden tidy up project? Do you have exposed compost that can be covered or secured?
The more you can do to deny harbourage for rats, the less attractive your property becomes to them.
DENY FOOD
Bird and chicken feed is a significant factor in rat presence. They will burrow and breed as close as possible to a regular food source, even directly below bird feeders.
Although feeding birds gives great pleasure, removing a rodent food source is vital if you want to prevent infestation.
DENY WATER
A rat's need for water is as vital as food. Can the leaky outside tap be fixed? Are there receptacles catching rainwater?
