RED LIGHT FOR WASPS - TAKE CARE WITH WASPS IN ATTICS!
Early on in this year's wasp season, a young family living in a centuries old cottage called me with a wasp problem. Due to the height of the entry point and fairly inaccessible position it was logical to go into the loft.
There were 3 nests in a row at the bottom of the roof. One was redundant from last year's treatment, but the others were dealt with successfully from a few feet away with powder being injected using lances.
A few weeks later they called to report renewed activity. The moment I arrived and looked up at the chimney stack I could see the telltale pouring in and out of the colony.
This time, a beachball sized nest was above the loft hatch.
The picture is a bit weird - I was on my ladder with my head just looking in through the loft hatch, iPhone in one hand and red light torch in the other.
White light agitates wasps, but the LED red light means you can get a good look without disturbing them. I also wanted the customer to see what was going on.
No powder this time though, but straight to a powerful aerosol to eradicate the nest and control the angry creatures.
Why 4 nests in one roof? The condition of the roof was quite poor, with easy access for the queen wasps through gaps in the mortar and daylight showing through the roof at various points.
We would definitely recommend not going into a loft/attic without PPE, when there is a known wasp presence!
