WASP OR HORNET? WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

After a busy winter dealing with rodent issues we are heading towards warmer weather and the wasp season. It's the busiest time of year for a pest controller. Perhaps in the past you have experienced a steady stream of what look like wasps entering and exiting some point on your property.

Are they wasps or could they be hornets? How can you tell?

Wasps are black and yellow, whereas the hornet is brown and yellow. It can have an obvious reddish hue. If you're thinking that they're very large wasps, then chances are they are hornets as they are twice the size of wasps.

Should you automatically call for pest control having seen wasps or hornets?

They should only be treated if they pose a risk to public health and safety.

Should you try and treat a nest yourself?

Wasps can be very aggressive and this can be very dangerous if you or others in close proximity don't have PPE.

Hornets are typically less aggressive than wasps, but the sting of a hornet is much more painful than wasps and bees, due to the chemicals in the venom.
