Do you need to call a pest controller for wasps?

The BPCA's advice is as follows: "Where possible it is worth leaving wasp nests to continue their valuable activities. However, there can come a time when the presence of wasps is detrimental to public health."

Wasps should only be treated if they pose a risk to public health and safety. Wasp stings are painful, but can be lethal in a worst case scenario. A wasps nest in a garden tree some considerable distance from your home or neighbouring property is an entirely different proposition to one in/on your home, shed, garage or garden.

Should you try DIY wasp control?

You should NEVER treat a wasp nest if you think you might be allergic to stings and without full personal protective equipment. Treating a wasp nest can be very dangerous. Wasps inside the nest will feel threatened and often become aggressive. Wasps will defend their nest resulting in multiple stings. Unlike bees, wasps don't die when they sting and can do this multiple times.

Three Counties Pest Control have the expertise, equipment and range of professional insecticides to safely deal with a nest.

Why not ask us about nest removal.

How can you tell the difference between wasps and bees?

Wasps and bees are similar in size but here are some noticeable differences:

  • Wasps have distinct yellow and black stripes

  • Bees are a nondescript light brown/golden colour

  • Bees are covered in downy hair, which assists in pollen collection

  • Wasps are more streamlined in shape and appearance

  • Wasps have more distinct thorax and abdomen segments

  • Wasps have legs that hang down during flight

Why is it important to differentiate between wasps and bees?

Bees and wasps are treated differently. Bees are an important and beneficial species and rarely considered a pest. Most pest controllers won't consider treating bees unless they are a significant threat to public health and safety.

Three Counties Pest Control are closely associated with bee keepers who will endeavour to remove bees and relocate them into hives.
